What is The Weekly Topic Inspiration, and Why Should You Take Part?
75
When I was new to Hubpages I noticed the title of a forum thread that read: “Weekly Topic Inspiration (Formerly HubMob)”.
I guessed that HubMob was similar to the Hub Elite – something you had to be invited to join and therefore not for the likes of me. So I didn’t even bother to read the thread.
Then, some weeks later on, I had another look the thread, which had now become simply:
Just plodding on
Weekly Topic Inspiration.
“No,” I thought. “I don’t need inspiration. My problem isn’t finding ideas, but finding time to write all the hubs I’ve got ideas for!” So once again I left the thread alone.
I plodded on, writing hubs, getting a few followers (very few) and a few views. Months passed with me earning the occasional cent.
I began to wonder if writing a hub for the Weekly Topic Inspiration might just be worth a go. If nothing else, it was one of the few places on Hubpages where you are not only allowed, but encouraged, to post links to Hubs.
If you are now in the same position that I was then, or even if you are simply curious, here are the answers to a few questions you might have about the Weekly Topic Inspiration – or WTI as it is often known.
So what exactly is the Weekly Topic Inspiration?
It is a topic that you can use as inspiration for Hubs. The topic usually changes weekly (hence the name.) Each week’s topic is chosen either by Simone Smith, HubPages friendly and fun-loving Community and Marketing Manager, or from suggestions made to her. So if you have an idea of a topic you think other Hubbers would find inspiring, then Simone is the person to tell.
Where can I find information about the Weekly Topic Inspiration?
Click the Forums Button on the black bar at the top of any page on Hubpages, and you will reach the forums. The screen shot below shows the first few Forum Topics, and all have a blue background. Those are “sticky” threads that stay at the top of the forums. In this shot the Weekly Topic Inspiration is right at the top. Even when it is not at the very top, it will be among the blue “stickies.
Well it sounds interesting, but…
Here are some objections you may have (based on my own initial objections or ones I’ve heard from fellow Hubbers.)
I already have plenty of ideas of my own, and not enough time to write them, so I don’t need this.
Isn’t it just like going back to school and doing what the teacher tells you?
I can’t write something just because I’m told to. I need to feel inspired.
If the subjects on which you write work well for you and you have all the traffic and money you’d like for your hubs then you probably don’t need the WTI. Otherwise read on to see what the Weekly Topic Inspiration could do for you…
No, not this kind of traffic!
Traffic
If however you would like to increase traffic, then I recommend you give it a go. I published my first Hub for the WTI on 25th October 2011, and had exactly the same number of views that day that I’d had for the entire month till then. In the last week of October I earned over 3 times as much as I’d earned the previous weeks. My earnings are still low as almost all my traffic as yet comes from Hubpages itself. This is beginning to change now, probably partly because my early hubs are maturing, but also because of another key feature of the WTI.
That key feature is:
Keywords
Even after 7 months of writing on Hubpages, I still don’t totally understand how to choose keywords, and at the beginning I was totally clueless. For the WTI, Simone takes the confusion out of keywords, by doing the research for us. She either lists frequently searched for keywords and keyword phrases to use in the body of a hub, or she lists titles search-engine friendly titles to consider.
The first couple of times I took part in the WTI, I ignored all this, and just wrote a hub and posted it, but after a while I began to see the folly of this. After all if Simone had done all the hard (not to mention boring) work to research keywords, and I was totally clueless, it was just ever so slightly silly of me not to make use of her expertise!
The last few WTI threads have all contained title suggestions, and since I find titles can be a challenge, I really like this. (Thank you Simone!) And do remember this is not like school, and it’s absolutely fine to add to or rearrange the titles, and to approach the subject from a direction that is way off the norm – I often do!
A Hub of the Day that I wrote for the Weekly Topic Inspiration
My Two Weekly Topic Inspiration Hubs of the Day
- You Can Do It Sam; by Amy Hest - How This Children’s Book Inspired A Child to Give
When a five-year-old girl read “You Can Do It Sam,” by Amy Hest, and saw what little Sam bear gave his friends, she wanted to do it too. A true story about the real meaning of the festive season. - 5 Delicious and Healthy Meals for Kids
This article gives step by step instructions, complete with photographs, of 5 healthy and delicious meals to feed your family througout the day.
Hub of The Day
The Hub of The Day, as most Hubbers probably know, is the hub which features on the Home page for Hubbers who are signed-in, and the front page for any readers who are not signed in. It also remains featured on the signed out home page for nine days. This gives your hub a lot of exposure.
You might be wondering what the Hub of the Day has to do with the Weekly Topic Inspiration. I’ve had three Hubs of the Day, and two out of those three were written for the WTI, as were several Hubs of the Day by other writers. With thousands of hubs written every day, HubPages staff members have a lot to sift through to choose hubs to feature on the front page. By taking part in the WTI, your hub will be much more visible to staff, and therefore more likely to get picked.
And why would you want a Hub of the Day? Traffic again, is the main reason, but it also is a great boost to a writer’s confidence, which brings me to another reason for taking part in the WTI.
Taking part in the Weekly Topic Inspiration boosts your confidence in your writing
When I started on HubPages, I had been writing a long time, but most of my output was fiction. It took me a long time to write (and rewrite) and I didn’t think I could write quickly – this was another reason I initially avoided the WTI. While it wouldn’t be correct to put the change in my writing speed entirely down to WTI, it has definitely played a part. Last week, I extensively researched and wrote a 2500 word article on in less than a day. I would never have dreamed I could do that a few months ago. I would like to write for magazines and newspapers, and I now know I can write quality articles at speed, so feel far more confident now that I could carry out any assignment.
A final, and very important, reason for taking part in the WTI, is that
Have you ever taken part in the Weekly Topic Inspiration?

This is about more than just getting traffic. If you are new to HubPages, taking part in the Weekly Topic Inspiration will soon help you to feel part of the HubPages community and you will see which Hubbers are interested in the same topics as you are. That makes the experience of writing on HubPages all the more enjoyable.
Okay, you’ve convinced me. How do I take part?

Very well done, indeed! I couldn't have said it better myself.
Voted up, awesome, interesting, useful and shared.
Great info and very well written. Voted up and useful.
Wow! You really nailed this. I was totally in the "I have plenty of ideas" category. Now, I am convinced I need to give WTI a try. Thanks for this hub!!
Thanks for the information! I too at times have very little time and am working on my speed and didn't know about the weekly topic inspiration. I think I'll check it out and make some hubs, would love to have some traffic. You know what I like so much about hubpages is that if I just check out some of the hubs others make I can learn all I need to know to be successful. Thanks!
Voted up and useful. I agree with you - doing these helps you be a part of the community and meet new hubbers. It also gives you a high value topic and additional readers.
Thanks for sharing this! I really appreciate your advice, this is really helpful. Voted up!
Awesome, Melovy! I did one, once, but I didn't know that Simone did the suggested titles and keywords! I should try to do these more often. I could use the exposure, and maybe the weekly inspiration topic would inspire me to get more hubs out there. Thanks for a great hub. Voted up, awesome, interesting, and, of course, useful!
Great idea for a hub, and I have to kind of laugh in admitting that, after 4 years at HubPages, I am finally just now using the WTI. My participation at HP has waxed and waned over the years and I generally stay away from the forums (black holes for my precious time).
I am thrilled to have found the Weekly Topic Inspiration and the keyword-suggested titles that Simone so graciously puts together for us. You can bet that I will be checking the topic each Monday and challenging myself to publish at least one hub on the weekly topic. :) Best, Steph
Voted up and awesome. This is everything I didn't know.
Thanks! I am new to hubpages and I didn't even know this opportunity existed! I will definitely start using this resource.
Thanks for pointing this out. It's fertile ground for new hubs, which I didn't know about. Voting this Up and Interesting.
Thank you so much for sharing this. This is very helpful information to those of us who are still new to Hubpages. Congratulations on all your great hubs of the day. They are always so beautiful and creative!
Great hub! I have done a couple of these, but often forget about them. But you are right. The hard part has been done for use so we might as well take advantage of it! I will have to go take a look more often.
Thank you for this! Lots of stuff I didn't know. Still learning. Voted Up Up Up and Very useful!
Thanks for your really helpful useful Hub (voting this accordingly).
I think I did one from the WTI recently, but from what you have just written I will get to writing from the threads more insidiously.
I sort of happen on things in Hubpages, but until someone like you S P E L L S things out the advantages are not clear to me.
So now I know better. Great!
Thanks too for pointing out how Simone's keyword searches help specifically-
Wow! You absolutely brought tremendous value and understanding to the advantages of WTI. Simone is amazing in her research and I have decided to put that to use. Thanks for the great hub!
Thank you for putting together this very useful hub.
WTI is something I have never looked at and had no idea how 'Hub of the week' was arrived at. I will now be checking this out.
Thank you for sharing this
Hi Yvonne,
This is a very useful hub. I did the WTI way back when it was still the HubMob. I was a newbie for sure then. The information here makes me want to do it again. So I thank you for the inspiration!
Sharyn
Hi Melovy - I'm glad you wrote this. I have done the WTI before - my problem is I don't like competing. But you've given me a terrific idea! I can still write about the topic and not enter it into the weekly thing. The result for me will be hopefully an increase in traffic.
Excellent hub as always! You're a whiz!
So now I know where to go
Good info here Melovy thanks.
Thanks Melovy! Glad you were the one here to help me out!

melovy...
This is excellent information for both new and old Hubbers alike...well...old Hubbers who didn't know this I suppose.
You are absolutely correct in the increased attention these Hubs get. I have only completed one of them (about Internet hackers) but that was my only hub that ever made it to a 100 hub score...note...now it's like a 60-something but all good things must end!
Thanks for reminding me of this...perhaps I will be able to throw together another one.
